Valuable insights into the role played by visual experience in shaping spatial representations can be gained by studying the effects of visual deprivation on the remaining sensory modalities. Recent research proposes a trade-off in the localization abilities of the early-blind individuals, showing superior abilities in some tasks but deficits in others. It is in fact unclear if the visual experience is necessary for the full development of spatial perception or if instead is just fundamental for the acquisition of specific spatial aspects and for the calibration of other sensory modalities.
The purpose of this presentation is then to 1) summarize the key findings which support either enhancements or deficits in spatial perception, and define a conceptual framework, 2) propose rehabilitation programs that include specific trainings for the impaired spatial skills from an early age.
